NEW YORK — A porn site that’s been criticized for failing in its duties to comply with the Federal Communications Commission’s regulations has been shut down.
The company behind the popular site Wayfair , the first major site to offer video-on-demand services, is now shut down, the Federal Trade Commission said in a statement Monday.
“Wayfair failed to comply for several years with the Commission’s sex trafficking enforcement efforts,” it said.
Wayfair is a private company that offers video-rental services on its website.
The FTC said Wayfair’s porn site was operating under “false pretenses” and “deliberately defrauded consumers and the Federal Government.”
The site’s porn business generated $2.5 million in revenue in the second quarter of this year.
WayFair’s porn operation also generated money from advertising and sponsorships for ads on its site, the FTC said.
The FTC also said WayFair violated the Communications Act by failing to take steps to ensure its users could receive free pornography.
Wayaway said in its statement that it would continue to work to comply and was willing to cooperate with any enforcement action the agency takes.
The site was launched in 2012 and was the first porn site to accept payments in Bitcoin, a digital currency that was not subject to the same regulations as traditional currencies.
The company said it was committed to providing safe and legal sex services to all users.
Wayaways CEO, Dan Ritchie, said the company had no plans to appeal the ruling.
